The Mercantile Canvas Tote
Advanced beginner work in heavy cloth. Finished it stands 18 inches wide, 15 inches tall and 6 inches deep, with webbing that continues beneath the bag so the load never hangs from the rim alone.
Step by step
Step 1
Cut the pieces
Exterior: two panels 20 x 19 in. Lining: two panels 20 x 19 in. Reinforced base: one exterior and one lining rectangle 19 x 7 in. Interior pocket: 14 x 10 in. Handles: two webbing lengths of 62 in each.
Step 2
Wash and press
Wash and press the canvas before cutting — heavy duck shrinks more than people expect.
Step 3
Build the body
Join the base to the panels, sew the side and bottom seams, and box the corners to the 6 inch depth. Repeat for the lining, leaving a turning gap in one lining seam.
Step 4
Add the pocket
Hem the pocket top, press the other edges under and topstitch it to one lining panel.
Step 5
Set the handles
Run each webbing length up one face, across the underside of the bag and back up the other face. Stitch both edges and box-and-cross every point where the handle leaves the bag.
Step 6
Join and finish
Place exterior and lining right sides together, sew around the top edge, turn through the lining, press carefully and topstitch twice. Close the lining opening and add the snap or rivets.
Built to carry market jars, folded linens, books, tools and the ordinary abundance of a busy day.
