The Hearthside Wood Carrier

About 36 by 17 inches laid flat. The handles wrap completely around the carrier so the webbing, not the cloth, takes the weight.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Cut the pieces

Body: two rectangles 38 x 19 in. Optional inner reinforcement: one rectangle 20 x 19 in. Handles: two continuous webbing lengths of 78 in each.

  2. Step 2

    Layer and baste

Place the two body rectangles wrong sides together and baste around the edges, adding the reinforcement between the layers at the centre if you are using it.

  3. Step 3

    Bind the long edges

Bind the long raw edges with folded canvas strips or heavy cotton twill tape.

  4. Step 4

    Run the webbing

Position each continuous webbing length 5 inches in from a long side. Run it down one face, across the underside and back up the other face, leaving equal handle loops at both ends.

  5. Step 5

    Stitch the handles down

Stitch both edges of each webbing length with a long straight stitch, then add reinforced boxes with diagonal crosses at the four points where the handles leave the body.

  6. Step 6

    Bind and inspect

Bind the short edges and check every stress point before the first load.

If it goes sideways

This is a hand carrier for ordinary split firewood, not a lifting sling. Test the seams before each use, carry only what is comfortable by hand, and keep it clear of flame and hot stove surfaces.
