A small Maine mercantile where food, making and traditional craft come together under one name.
One roof, three worlds
Finch Mercantile began the way most small shops do — with a kitchen, a sewing table and more ideas than shelf space. What comes out of each is different, but the method is the same: a small number of good things, made slowly, made to last.
I have been baking for more than fifteen years, mostly self-taught, and partly taught by watching generations of techniques passed hand to hand. The recipes I return to are the ones that survived because they work, not because they are fashionable.
Provisions lead the way. Bread and fudge and preserves are the things people reach for first, and they set the tone for everything else: warm, generous, unfussy. The sewing room and the fiber work follow the same standard.
This site is being built in the open. Products, patterns, tools and writing will arrive as they are finished rather than all at once.
